Since the start of the new fiscal year (July 1, 2007), Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southwestern PA, known also as Innovation Works, has made first-time investments in four different startup companies. As part of the Ben Franklin portfolio, these companies also receive intensive business assistance from the Executives in Residence team.
Biosafe, Inc.
Investment: $300,000
Biosafe is developing antimicrobial polymers that impart protection from harmful effects of bacteria, mold, mildew, fungi and even certain viruses such as HIV. Plastics, fiberglass, metals, glass, wood, ceramics, stone, natural materials and composites can all become permanently protected from microbes. The antimicrobial polymer can be included in many common manufacturing processes, and the material is safe to ship, store and apply.
CastGrabber, LLC
Investment: $200,000
CastGrabber creates advanced unique home electronics. Recently the company launched its first electronic device that autonomously downloads podcasts directly to almost all MP3 players—without a PC. The number of audio and video podcasts downloaded every year is approximately 177 million. Using the simple Microsoft Personal Media Player plug-in provided by CastGrabber, the user can easily configure the CastGrabber to subscribe to podcasts as well as synchronize media files between their PC and their non-iPod personal media player. CastGrabber plans an entire product line of hardware accessories for Personal Media Players which will roll out later this year.
Redpack Network, Inc.
Investment: $300,000
RedPack Network has developed an automated tracking system and network of pick-up and drop-off locations for service parts logistics. The system greatly improves efficiency and cost effectiveness for businesses that rely on field technicians to deliver and install replacement parts for computers, office equipment and other machinery.
ShowClix, LLC
Investment: $150,000
ShowClix is a live music search engine and online ticketing company created to connect musicians, venues and show promoters with the millions of live music fans across North America. The website combines an open, live music database with an online ticketing platform, giving show promoters, musicians and venues an easy, affordable way to promote their shows and sell tickets to music fans who search for, track and share live music on the site.
